Hormone Therapy

What is hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy uses estradiol and progesterone derived from the wild yam and soy to replace hormones that are not being produced by the body. Also called HRT or hormone replacement therapy, hormone treatments can be very effective in relieving the symptoms of menopause, and they’re also commonly used to treat issues like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and other issues that cause a decline in estrogen and progesterone.

What are bioidentical hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are synthetic hormones that are created to mirror the chemical structure or hormones naturally produced by the body. Most are then created into various transdermal products to be taken in through the skin.  By doing so, it appears to be safer - especially in regards to blood clots in the leg or deep vein thrombosis. Traditional HRT was associated with serious medical risks in some patients because the estrogens were taken orally and travelled through the liver increasing the risks in the veins, gallbladder and triglycerides.

What kinds of symptoms can be caused by low levels of hormones?

Low levels of estrogen or progesterone can cause a variety of symptoms and side effects ranging from mild to severe, including:

  • irregular or abnormal periods
  • spotting between periods
  • vaginal dryness
  • decreased interest in sex
  • abnormal hair growth on the face or elsewhere on the body
  • thinning hair on the head
  • moodiness and irritability
  • problems sleeping
  • sore or tender breasts
  • difficulty focusing or concentrating (so-called brain fog)
  • brittle hair and nails
  • headaches and joint pain

What happens during therapy with bioidentical hormones?

Before hormone therapy begins, patients will have a thorough history of symptoms, exam and occasionally lab testing to confirm the symptoms they’re experiencing are being caused by low levels or hormones. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, hormones may be prescribed in one of several forms, including creams, patches or gels. Regular exams and mammograms can also play an important role in monitoring for potential side effects.

Is HRT a good choice for me?

Hormone therapy has helped millions of women lead more comfortable, healthier lives, but it’s not ideal for every patient. Scheduling an office visit is the best way to decide if HRT is a good choice for your health and your lifestyle.
